Reading between the signs: Parents learn to understand children's emotions
Helping parents recognise the emotional needs of their children was the focus of an awareness session organised at a private school in Indore. Clinical and child psychologist Dr Vini Jhariya, director of Urjasvini Special School, Indore, interacted with parents on identifying behavioural changes and responding with understanding and support.
Addressing the session, Dr Jhariya said children often express emotions through their behaviour when they are unable to communicate their feelings. "Sudden silence, anger or withdrawal may be a sign that a child needs support," she said.
She said behavioural changes are a natural part of growing up, but parents should observe shifts in their children's sleep patterns, eating habits, daily routines and participation in school activities, as these may indicate emotional concerns. According to Dr Jhariya, early recognition and timely guidance can help children cope with challenges before they become more serious.
Dr Jhariya encouraged parents to create a supportive home environment by spending uninterrupted time with their children, listening without distractions and maintaining open communication. "A home built on love, trust and acceptance helps children feel secure," she said.
She also advised parents to avoid comparing children with others and instead appreciate their efforts while allowing them to learn from their mistakes.
During the session, parents were asked to watch for warning signs such as social withdrawal, frequent irritability, changes in appetite or sleep, loss of interest in favourite activities, persistent negative self-talk, anxiety and repeated physical complaints without a medical cause.
The session highlighted the role of parents and schools in working together to support children's emotional well-being and healthy development.
