World Environment Day 2025: Janak Palta McGilligan Leads Call to “Beat Plastic Pollution” at 33rd Annual Environmental Dialogue

The Jimmy and Janak McGilligan Foundation for Sustainable Development is organizing the 33rd Annual Weeklong Environmental Dialogue starting May 30 at the Jimmy McGilligan Centre in Sanawadiya, Indore. The event marks World Environment Day 2025 and aligns with the United Nations Environment Programme’s theme: “Collective Action to Beat Plastic Pollution.”

Janak Palta McGilligan emphasized the urgent need for global cooperation to tackle plastic pollution, which poses severe threats to human health, wildlife, agriculture, water resources, and ecosystems. The dialogue invites governments, organizations, and citizens to adopt sustainable practices aimed at reducing plastic waste through reuse, boycott, and responsible consumption.

Weeklong Discussions Address Plastic Pollution Across Key Areas

The dialogue will run through June 5, featuring daily sessions focused on specific topics related to plastic pollution:

  • May 30: Opening ceremony with keynotes by Postmaster General of Indore, Preeti Agarwal, and environmentalist Ajay Kumar, IIT Delhi alumnus.

  • May 31: Discussions on sustainable food systems with founder of Jaivik Setu, Ambrish Kela.

  • June 1: Session on plastic pollution’s impact on clean water, featuring Padma Shri awardee Bhalu Mondhe.

  • June 2: Focus on creating a clean and green environment with Prof. Rajiv Sangal, former director of IIT BHU and IIIT Hyderabad.

  • June 3: Tackling air pollution led by IT expert and environmentalist Bharat Singh.

  • June 4: Promoting eco-friendly lifestyles with CEO of SWAAHA, Sameer Sharma, and wellness expert Shefali Sangal.

  • June 5: Closing event with cultural performances and presentation of a collective action plan by Padma Shri awardee Sushil Doshi.

Inclusive Collaboration From Various Stakeholders

The event gathers environmentalists, social workers, academics, government officials, and citizens from both urban and rural areas. Interactive sessions allow participants to share ideas, strategies, and innovative solutions aimed at achieving a plastic pollution-free India.
