Nursing Students Learnt Sustainable Living for Climate Action from Padma Shri Janak Palta McGilligan
A group of 45 students (4th year) St. Francis College of Nursing came on an educational visit to Jimmy McGilligan Centre for Sustainable Development, Sanawadiya, Indore.r the students of. A total of 45 students participated in the visit to learn about sustainable living, environmental conservation, renewable energy, and community empowerment. The group reached the centre at 9:15 a.m.
During the visit, students observed medicinal plants, organic farming practices, solar cookers, renewable energy systems, and other eco-friendly technologies. The centre demonstrated practical ways of living sustainably while minimizing environmental impact. Dr. Janak Palta McGilligan, Director of Jimmy McGilligan Centre has been practicing Sustainable Living and training people in sustainable development through education, renewable energy, plantation, organic farming, environmental conservation, and community empowerment totally free of cost
At 10:30 a.m., students attended an interactive session by Dr. Janak Palta McGilligan, Padma Shri awardee and founder of the centre. She shared her more than 40 years of experiences in social service and community development, particularly her efforts to empower rural communities and women. Her inspiring journey and achievements motivated all participants.
The session was highly interactive, providing students with an opportunity to ask questions and share their thoughts and experiences. Students enthusiastically discussed environmental conservation practices followed in their respective districts. One student from Kalyanpura in Jhabua, shared that she had studied at a school hostel in Dattigaon where all the food was cooked in a Solar Kitchen made by Jimmy McGilligan . She remarked that seeing the sustainable practices demonstrated at the centre reminded her of her childhood and reinforced the importance of using renewable sources of energy in daily life.
The visit encouraged students to take climate action by adopting eco-friendly practices such as tree plantation, reducing plastic use, conserving natural resources, and promoting sustainable alternatives in their daily lives. Overall, the visit was informative, enriching, and motivational. It enhanced students’ understanding of sustainability and social responsibility and inspired them to contribute towards a greener and more sustainable future.
