Blades beyond barriers: Students step into para-fencing arena
Samriddhi Kumar, Alfaiz Mugal and Vandan Chawla, students of Urjasvini Special School, Indore, have been selected to compete in the district-level para-fencing championship organised by the Indore Fencing Sports Development Association. The three athletes will participate in the foil event.
School director Vini Jhariya said participation in sports is important for children with special needs as it helps them build confidence and independence. “Sports provide these children with opportunities to discover their abilities and develop self-belief. Platforms like para-fencing encourage them to step forward and compete with determination,” she said.
Jhariya said the students' achievement reflected their dedication and the support of teachers and parents. “Every child has potential, and with the right guidance and encouragement, they can excel in different fields,” she said, adding that inclusive sports activities help integrate such students into the wider community.
The players have been training under fencing coach and self-defence instructor Sayeed Alam, who has been mentoring them in the sport.
Speaking about the participants, Alam said, “Para-fencing athletes are second to none in terms of willpower and courage. Their hard work and self-confidence inspire everyone.” He added that with proper training and opportunities, the students could represent Indore at state and national competitions.
